New Dashboard Set to Improve Hip Fracture Care Across Northern Ireland

A new regional dashboard developed through the Big Discussion initiative is helping health and care teams gain deeper insights into the care journey of patients with fractured neck of femur (hip fractures).
The dashboard, showcased in the latest Digital Dispatches Year of Data mini-series by Senior Workflow Analyst Ken Ross, brings together live data from across the patient pathway, from the initial ambulance call through to discharge and follow-up care. The project was developed collaboratively over the past eight months by colleagues across HSC, including encompass, SPPG, analysts and Trust clinicians.
Using data already captured within encompass and the National Hip Fracture Database, the team built 19 key performance indicators, providing service leads with a clearer view of patient flow, treatment timelines and potential bottlenecks. The dashboard is designed to support shared learning across Trusts and help drive improvements in the quality and consistency of care.
The work supports wider efforts to address system pressures and improve outcomes for patients. Evidence shows that timely surgery following a hip fracture can significantly improve recovery, making access to accurate, real-time data an important tool for identifying opportunities for improvement.
Speaking during the session, Ken highlighted the collaborative nature of the project, expressing thanks to colleagues across Trusts, SPPG and the Cogito analytics team for their contributions. He emphasised that the dashboard’s success was built on strong partnership working and a shared commitment to using data to improve patient care.
The dashboard will soon be available to planners, service leads and decision-makers across the region.
