Led by Shane McGuinness, Coding Specialist within the Data Institute, the session explored the often unseen but essential role that coding plays across Health and Social Care. From supporting patient care and service planning to enabling research, analytics, population health insights and national reporting, coding helps translate [SM1] healthcare information into meaningful data that can drive better decisions and outcomes.
The session provided a practical introduction to clinical coding, classifications with associated standards, terminology [SM2] and the importance of data quality. It also highlighted real examples of how coded data supported the COVID-19 response, service planning and healthcare management across Northern Ireland.
One key message resonated throughout the discussion: good quality data is everyone’s responsibility. Whether you work in digital, data, clinical services, information management or programme delivery, understanding the basics of coding can help you appreciate how information is recorded, shared and used across the health and care system.
