Telephone land lines are going digital

The switch from analogue telephone land lines to new digital phone lines is coming to Northern Ireland.

The UK government has decided that the ‘analogue network’ currently used by most home phones will be switched over by 2025 and replaced with a new ‘digital network’.
Whilst we know that over 40% of households no longer use a land line at home in favour of using their mobile phones, many households, particularly older adults, still rely on a land line.  In addition, telecare devices such as personal pendant alarms, falls alarms or home security systems that currently connect to an existing analogue phone line, will need connected to the new digital network or in some cases, equipment may need upgraded or an adaptor provided.  You will not be charged for any changes required.
But don’t worry, the digital telephone switchover will not happen overnight.  The transition from analogue to digital phone lines is being phased in region by region.  Households will receive a letter from their telephone provider eg. BT, Virgin, TalkTalk, EE, SKY, when the switch is coming to your area.
If you care for someone or know of anyone who relies on a home telephone or uses a telecare device that is connected to a land line, please ensure you look out for information on the digital switchover so they are prepared for the switch and know what to do when it comes to their area so they are not left unconnected.
If you have questions about the digital switchover and how it may impact you or your family members, you should contact your telephone service provider directly.
