People across Northern Ireland are able to experience a new way of engaging with their health and care services through My Care, the patient portal.

Dr. Neil Black, Chair of The My Care Regional Governance and Decision Making Group and Chief Clinical Information Officer of the Western Health and Social Care Trust who gives an overview of the new innovative platform. “My Care is an application on a mobile phone or on a browser which allows people to access their own information about their care,” explains Dr. Black.

What My Care means for service users
Through My Care, service users can:

  • View their health and social care summaries including some past conditions, medications and allergies.
  • Dates of hospital admissions and outpatients appointments.
  • View clinical letters and after visit summaries
  • View some test results (from secondary care)

Normal results are released immediately, while abnormal results are delayed by two weeks to allow clinicians time to interpret and communicate them appropriately. Some results may only be shared manually by a clinician, especially when more complex care decisions are involved.

Proxy Access
Dr. Black highlights the importance of proxy access, which allows a competent adult to share parts of their record with someone else. This is especially vital for:

  • Parents managing care for their children
  • Carers supporting vulnerable adults, such as those living with dementia

Dr. Black explains: “It’s in the best interest that others can access the record to help guide their care, make sure they get to appointments, and help explain information to them.”

Accessing My Care Safe and secure- nidirect account
My Care is a safe and secure online portal, providing secure access to your health information, making it easier to stay connected, informed and involved in your care.

To access My Care you must search for “MyChart” in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. You must have a nidirect account to verifying your identity, if you do not have one you can create one during the sign-up process. This verification is in place to ensure that access to My Care remains safe, reliable and secure.

Access for people outside Northern Ireland
As Dr Black outlines, if you are based in another jurisdiction, such as the Republic of Ireland, you can still have your identity verified to use My Care. This involves a manual verification step, which may take a little longer to complete.
